Tales from 86 Darfler lane - post 1

The adventure begins...

Well, I guess there is a correction to be made.  While March 14, 2015 (Pi Day!) does, in fact, mark the very first blog post for SALO Farm and thus TALES FROM 86 DARFLER LANE (with a nod and a wink and apologies to Armistead Maupin), there is a lot of history to prior to this day.

I guess, first, I should introduce myself.  My name is Jan-Peter Pedross.  I am the only child of a Finnish mother and
German-Austrian father. I was born in Frankfurt, Germany but grew up in New York City (until age 4) and Colorado. I guess you could say I am an American with European sensibilities.

I am also an actor living in New York City, having moved to the big apple to attend New York University's Undergraduate Drama Department. My artistic career has never been financially stable, but has more often than not been artistically fulfilling.

I have spent numerous summers in Salem, New York, working for Mettawee River Theatre Company, which is how I originally was introduced to the property located at 86 Darfler Lane (the owners are colleagues of Mettawee).  While I was a member of the 2014 Mettawee company, I learned that  the property was for sale, and so began my folly.

It's been a 9-month-long journey for me to purchase 86 Darfler Lane.  It's been a strangely complicated process due to the fact that the sellers are a collective of artists, more often than not spread across the world, so communications and agreements are slow.  Then there were the various delays as our attorneys, the title company, and all the other players in a real estate transaction worked on the details of what became a surprisingly complicated deal.

It's been maddening and exhilarating and terrifying and frustrating. I have often wondered if it was worth continuing, but then I would look at pictures of the property or take a drive up to visit it, and I would be reminded how magical and inspiring this place is and how much I wanted to it to be available to artists, performers, musicians, healers, teachers,  and anyone who needs a place to make a special event more special.

And while, as of this post, I actually still do not have a firm closing date, all signs are pointing to finally being able to schedule it in the next two weeks.  With that prospect and my fingers crossed (making typing difficult), I thought prudent to begin documenting the creation of SALO Farm with TALES FROM 86 DARFLER LANE.  I will fill in more details of the process leading up in upcoming posts, as well as documenting the adventure as it continues.

I look forward to seeing you at SALO Farm!
